The Grand Plan Odyssey
port cities is an international performance event linking five cities along ancient Dutch trade routes. From Fremantle in Western Australia to the Cape of Good Hope, from Amsterdam and New York to the ports of Jakarta, port cities aims to explore our interconnected heritage through investigating local movements past and present.

Over the course of approximately five to seven years, each of these cities will host a port cities performance comprising local actors and a team of international and local collaborators. Each port cities performance will contain the same elements:
  • an outdoor or non theatre performance space,
  • a projected video montage sequence depicting ‘movement’ particular to that city,
  • and an exploration into that particular city’s connection with Dutch trade route history (and its own location on the route).

Local myths, legends and folklores will be explored against the backdrop of current contemporary issues affecting each city. The port cities performance events will be available online on a port cities website allowing participating cities to interact and reflect on the project as a whole. At the end of the journey, the sum of the five cities will be compiled into a DVD documentary available for each city's host festival/organisation to keep as a performance in ‘five movements’ like an opera.
