SANCTUARY CITY

Picture

From public workshops with street artists to the showings of new work from eight experimental theatre companies, monthly music concerts, innovative site based performance art and expanded cinema productions; Public Works Department presented Sanctuary City - six months of Art & Music & Performance on Governors Island from May 2017 till October 2017. .

The Armory: The Library of Empty Books

Armory was a community library, a public space for communal storytelling in the form of recordings and writings, an art-making space, and a meeting space. We are proud that New York City & New York State have defended its Sanctuary City status. All of our stories are valid & necessary. People from all ages and walks of life came and contributed their stories in empty books that sat on our shelves. At the end of our six month residency, we held a public storytelling event where we read out from the anonymous stories in our library.

Eight innovative ensemble driven companies were invited to Governors Island to make new work in three ten day residency sessions. The companies were:  Tiny Little Band & Two Tone Rambler & Little Lord & Rady & Bloome  & Charles Quittner & co & Beyond the Wall Project & New Saloon & Radical Evolution

The brief:

To develop new, exciting, ensemble driven performance work in a devised setting.
At the end of each ten-day residency, the companies will present something to the public.
