[lacuna: a hiatus, a gap, a depression, a space or cavity within or between the tissue of an organism.] The Lacuna Project set out exploring where various in-between or liminal spaces occurred in society, how we inhabited these spaces and what affect they had on us. A brief was sent out to friends worldwide to capture on slide film, their interpretation of inbetween/liminal spaces within their cities; San Francisco, Cape Town and London, while I did a series for Melbourne. Once these images were collated and the cast assembled, we began investigating the stories that emerged from these spaces. Our interpretation extended itself from physical spaces such as escalators to psychic spaces such as an obsessive compulsive who lives between chaos and control (see video clip), legal spaces such as a refugee who sits within a detention centre, and cultural spaces such as a migrant who lives between two homes. Together with the projections, we assembled glimpses of these stories woven together by an interactive sound, light and visual scape.
